PAULINA EDOBOR FOUNDATION (PEF)
PROJECT DETAILS
Unnoticed by much of the world, millions of children face inconceivable hardships in their day-to-day lives. The numbers alone are striking.
-
There are approximately 160,000,000 orphans throughout the world.
-
Nigeria's Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development estimates that there are 17.5 million orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) nationwide (Nigeria).
-
These children face enormous challenges to their health and development and it is estimated that 95 percent of OVC do not receive any type of medical, emotional, social, material, or school-related assistance (National Population Commission, Federal Republic of Nigeria, and ICF International 2013).
-
About 70 percent experienced household food insecurity, putting them at risk for malnutrition (Tagurum et al. 2015).
-
another 30% are addicted to drugs or alcohol, and while 10% commit suicide.
-
This does not represent the countless number of homeless children living on the streets.
-
Nearly 60% of families in Nigeria live below the poverty line.
